John Houghton Allen was born in Austin, Texas in 1909, the son of a distinguished family owning sixty thousand acres of ranch land and considerable positions of Austin, San Antonio, and San Angelo. He attended Terrell College in Dallas, Texas A. & M. College, St. Edwards College in Austin, The University of Texas, The University of Mexico, and summer schools at Michigan and Columbia. By the age of twenty he was studying in Paris.
He soon returned to the ranch in Texas, where he lived hard, rode in rodeos, and became a professional polo player at Rumson and Santa Barbara. He married a Santa Barbara Polo Player, name Ann Louisa Lenone. They had a child and named him David Houghton Allen.
They lived on the Jesus Maria Ranch, where he built an addition to the house to give it that Chateau feel. After the war, the Allens left Texas for Laguna Beach, California.
